Wagner College Welcomes 2015 Mandela Washington Fellows from Africa #MWF2015 #YALI2015

Indeed I would say it’s a dream come through for the 2015 Mandela Washington fellows arriving at the Famous Wagner College of Staten Island New York to participate at the Prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship a flagship program of the President’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) and embodies President Obama’s commitment to invest in the future of Africa. Through this initiative, young African leaders are gaining the skills and connections they need to accelerate their own career trajectories and contribute more robustly to strengthening democratic institutions, spurring economic growth, and enhancing peace and security in Africa. The Mandela Washington Fellowship is a program of the United States Government. The U.S. components are administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs and supported by IREX, a U.S. non-governmental agency.

The Founder of Traffina Foundation for Community Health, Chinomnso Ibe and other amazing 19 fellows from different African countries who are Young Leaders & Non-Profit CEOs all arrived safely to study Civic Leadership at the College for six (6) weeks before proceeding to Washington DC to meet with President Obama during the summit.
Through the six-week summer academic institute at Wagner College, the Fellows will be taken through civic leadership knowledge, skills, and dispositions that will allow the Young Leaders to become more effective leaders and collaborator. This provide a quality civic leadership program that will help to engage, strengthen or help start up civic organization, helping to shape political, social, and moral engagement within home /communities. To do this, Wagner College has developed a curriculum rooted in its own civic engagement mission and intensive work with local immigrant communities.

The Wagner College program will include:
•Interactive seminar-style classrooms, community visits, and cultural encounters around issues of Education, Healthcare, Economic Development, and the Environment
•Social and cultural exchanges between community leaders, College members, and African leaders, focusing on collaborative social innovation
•Experiential learning regarding the impact of not-for-profit organizations, grant writing, and organizational development
The program will conclude with a Summit August 2-5 hosted by President Obama in Washington, D.C.
“It’s been a great time at Wagner College, wonderful and interesting people” Says Chinomnso
