Traffina Foundation over the past ten years has consistently provided maternal newborn and child health care support in 28 states in Nigeria including the state affected by insurgency. We are thankful to our staff and pool of volunteers across the states reaching the unreach and helping Nigerian women stay alive at time of pregnancy, during and after childbirth.
Traffina Foundation for Community currently working is in Borno and Adamawa state Nigeria (North eastern Nigeria) Providing maternal newborn and child health care, nutrition care, family planning, sexual reproductive health right for internally displaced families affected by the insurgency from boko haram attacks. Aside the above mentioned states, TFCH is working in 7 states in Nigeria on Maternal and Child health.
Lets Save Our Mothers:
In 2012 TFCH won a grant challenge that was open for Nurse Leaders across the globe. The founder being a Nurse Midwife applied using the “lets save our Mothers “ project which was aimed at bringing pregnant women out of cultural/ traditional harmful practices that imposes them to the torture of giving birth alone, use of particular bones of animal as part of child delivery tools, insertion of mixed herbs in the perineum to have the desired sex of a child, and being subjected to hot water bath in a room prior to childbirth in other to hasten child delivery.
This grant was given and coordinated by Connecting Nurses, Sanofi Aventis and Millennia Foundation. TFCH was able to carry out community advocates on dangers of traditional harmful practices during pregnancy and child birth to 12 rural communities in Nigeria.
Care Project for Internally Displaced Persons: TFCH is currently providing the following support to IDPS in FCT Abuja.
- Free Medical services
- Educational support (tutorials) for internally displaced children between age four (4) and above.
- Psychological care & counseling
- Free Ante-natal care services for displaced pregnant mothers.
- Provision of food items and clothing.
- Sanitary Care for teenage girls and young women.
TFCH team with some of the displaced children in one of the resettlement camps. The number of IDPs in Nigeria has been growing rapidly in the last six months of 2014 especially in FCT. The bulk of displacement took place in three north-eastern states affected by insurgent groups and violence, namely Adamawa, Borno and Yobe, where the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) had registered 868,235 IDPs as of December 2014 across Nigeria (UNHCR, December 2014). TFCH has access and visited various resettlement camps located within FCT and has as well commenced the above listed activities.
Etisalat Traffina Foundation Community Maternal Health Project:
Over 600 women have benefitted from a Maternal Healthcare Delivery Program sponsored by Nigeria’s most innovative telecommunications operator, Escalate in partnership with frontline NGO on maternal and Child Health, Traffina Foundation for Community Health.
The women who were mainly pregnant mothers were drawn from 16 communities in six South-South and South-East states of Edo, Delta, Cross River, Imo, Anambra and Enugu.
The Program, which held in 2015 in the beneficiary states was designed to help prevent cases of maternal death and infection during childbirth resulting from ignorance, carelessness, errors from untrained givers and patronage of traditional birth attendants
It featured key presentations on maternal health information’s by the TFCH founder as well as distribution of free Moms & Newborn Delivery kits which contained basic childbirth tools that enhance safe and infection-free child delivery.
Free Medical Mission / Community Health Care:
From 2007 till date Traffina Foundation has been at the front line providing free medical care / services to the hard to reach rural communities and internally displaced families Northern Nigeria who have no access or means of utilizing health care services . This includes Ante-natal care services , free eye and dental care, hearing screening, blood glucose monitoring, malaria test and treatment, immunization and deworming exercise for under 5, physical consultation and referral etc.
- Over the past 10 years we offered Free medical care to 21,000 Nigerians in 35 rural communities
- Free Community Ante-natal care , so far reached 8,321 women.
Birthing Right Project Nigeria
In 2015 TFCH won a grant to provide maternal newborn and child health support to HIV positive pregnant women and new mothers. This project brought together HIV positive women who were empowered to live positive , support each other and also trained on treatment adherence , Nutrition care, prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV AIDs and birth preparedness..
Our women who goes through the agony of rejection and discrimination during childbirth by health personnel’s on not having there own delivery supplies , where consistently given free Moms & Newborn Delivery Kit which gave them confidence to be treated with dignity and respect like every other women out there.
This project which was supported by ICW West Africa continued after the projected ended and saved lives of one thousand four hundred and eighty seven (1,487) women and children

This project is targeted at providing support for pregnant mothers and newborn. Here TFCH provides free clean birth & newborn born kits that contains all necessary sterile items for delivery including chlohexidine gel for cord care and misoprostol for management of post-partum hemorrhage.This project is targeted at providing support for pregnant mothers and newborn. Pregnant Mothers at Kogo Health center with the birth kits. This project which was launched at the Abuja Sheraton hotel and towers on 29th of March 2013, has produced and distributed five thousand (5000) clean delivery kits thus saving more than 10,000 lives across FCT, Imo, Kebbi, Kaduna, and Abia states.

The School of Husbands Project:
TFCH founder educating men on signs of labor
This program is targeted towards involving men in maternal and child health programs. Currently the organization is working in Bwari area council. This program has improved the roles of men in supporting their wives on pregnancy and delivery outcomes. The organization has developed an invitation slip that invites partners to participate at first Ante-natal booking with their pregnant wives. This program has also improved the outcome in PMTCT in the facility as couples receive HIV testing and counseling reducing the burden of single disclosure of status. According to the Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics of Nigeria (SOGON), 20% of women in the country give birth on their own, in their homes, as a result of decisions made by their husbands, while another 25% are only attended to by traditional birth attendants, most of them cannot handle complicated cases but can rarely refer them to trained medical personnel.
Therefore this strategy which creates awareness on male support for their spouses should be given a broader frontier, both in clinics, households and community levels. The organization has so far involved 3000 men, as they have a priceless role to play towards a significant improvement in maternal health .There is growing evidence that the role of men in the access of care is very important given their large role in family decision making. Men’s knowledge about danger signs of pregnancy and what to do about them is very relevant to their life-saving role during pregnancy and childbirth, this has been made possible by the organization through regular sensitization.
Mapping and training of Traditional Birth Attendants
Traffina Foundation currently works with some Traditional Birth Attendants in rural FCT and Imo state. The TBAs are trained on the extent to handle pregnant women, background information about pregnancy and deliveries, including how to identify danger signs in pregnancy and prompt referral to nearby PHCs.
